SiVola: The Supercar of the Sea

Antonio Cataldi's Award-Winning 35 mt Motor Yacht Design

Antonio Cataldi's SiVola, a 35 mt motor yacht, is a unique blend of speed, strength, and comfort. Inspired by military aeronautics and car design, this vessel is a testament to Cataldi's innovative approach to yacht design. SiVola's unique design, which combines aggressive aesthetics with the comfort of a superyacht, has earned it the prestigious Silver A' Yacht and Marine Vessels Design Award in 2018.

The design of SiVola is a departure from traditional yacht design, which often consists of block-like structures. Instead, Cataldi has integrated elements such as spoilers, air inlets, escapes, grids, sleek lines, and muscles into one organic shape, reminiscent of a fighter aircraft or a supercar. This approach has allowed the designer to avoid the "copy and paste" effect often seen in yacht design.

Despite its aggressive look, SiVola does not compromise on comfort. The design is a harmonious blend of these two elements. For instance, the sun deck, traditionally a comfort element, is integrated into the shape as if it were an aircraft wing. This dualism is a defining feature of SiVola's design.

The yacht is constructed using GRP for the hull and superstructure, and polycarbonate for the wheelhouse dome. It measures 35.00 mt in length, 7.50 mt in beam, and 1.5 mt in draft, with a displacement of 120,000 Kg. It is powered by 2x Mtu 12V 2000 M96L engines and can accommodate 8-10 guests and a crew of 5.

One of the most distinctive features of SiVola is its Command Dome, which provides a panoramic 360 view similar to that of a fighter aircraft. The dome can be opened when the yacht is in a bay. The yacht also features multiple lounge areas on the main and sun deck, complete with a bar and Jacuzzi. A large window connects the internal lounge bow area with the pool area, further enhancing the comfort on board.

The design of SiVola started in March 2017 in Florence and was completed in May 2017. The design process involved extensive research into military and supercar industry designs, with the aim of creating a timeless look that would not become obsolete after a few years. This research involved the collection of a large amount of images from books and the internet, which served as examples of the various design solutions adopted in these industries.

One of the main challenges in designing SiVola was to maintain a high standard of comfort while achieving an aggressive look. This required fitting all the elements of a same-length motoryacht into SiVola's aerodynamic profile, including interior heights, sundeck furniture, pool and lounge areas, and crew area. However, Cataldi successfully overcame this challenge, resulting in a design that is both comfortable and visually striking.

SiVola's unique design and the innovative approach it represents have earned it the Silver A' Yacht and Marine Vessels Design Award in 2018. This award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation, and that introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder. SiVola is indeed a testament to Cataldi's remarkable design skills and his ability to push the boundaries of yacht design.
